There are so many Awesome People In The World

24 Apr

And this June, I may have a chance to meet some of them at the Trailblazer Gathering , founded by Blake Boles, in Asheville! That is, if I get to go. Which is pretty much dependent on me not having a drill rescheduled for anytime that week. Oh yeah, and having money to pay for it. Hopefully, neither of those things interfere (interfer? idk) and I’m able to go. “Chari, what is this Trailblazer Gathering you speak of?” you may ask. Well, invisible internet person (who may or may not actually be there) the best way to learn about it would be to go through the link and read the Vision. I’d rather you get your own firsthand persective than for me to tell you about it and not do it justice. While you’re there, check out the schedule for all of the things that they’ll we’ll be doing that week. What I will tell you is that it’ll be awesome. Maybe I’ll see ya there.

Weekend Update with Chari McG: Fishay Fishay, Prom, and Swearing In

23 Apr

I could’ve sworn that I updated this last Tuesday, but I guess I didn’t. Anyway, here’s what Ive been up to.

1. Went to prom. It was awesome! I danced the night away (whoohoo!go me!!) I saw lots of people that I used to go to school with, which was nice. We went to dinner at Bonefish , nad whatever it was I ordered was absolutely delicious! Also, Bonefish now has brown paper coverings on top of their tables, so I got to draw pictures with crayons while we were waiting for our food :D. My mom came and did my makeup before we left the house.  That was the first time I’ve ever worn makeup. Probably the last until I get married. It looked good and I didn’t mind it, but it took forever to get all off.

2. I swore in Monday 😀 That was a very long day @ MEPS since I also had my physical that morning. My recruiter picked me up at 5 and I left MEPS at around 2.  There were two other recruits that swore in with me that day. I met some pretty cool people as well as some people who definitely aren’t going to make it through basic training. I’ll make another post about my experience later. I learned something to: You can take your ASVAB, physical, swear in and ship out all on the same day! For some reason I thought they didn’t do that anymore. Everything went smoothly through the day, with the exception of me almost getting the wrong job. I was going in as a 91b, but my recruiter accidentally pulled a 91p place for me. THAT would’ve been terrible. Fortunately, we caught it before I signed my contract. Oh yeah, and I almost didn’t get to swear in because of my weight. I was literally .1% over the required BMI for my height. The doctor told me that I absolutely cannot loose any weight by the time I ship to reception or they’ll make me wait until I gain it before I ship to basic. So now I’m on a strict weight lifting/protein+carb heavy/minimum running regimen until I ship.

3. I prepared my first Red Snapper for dinner Tuesday. Not a big deal to most people, but I’ve always wanted to make a meal of one and couldn’t afford it. They’re pretty expensive fishies. Like $11.99 a pound expensive. But my mom bought me one after I swore in Monday 🙂 .  I grilled it on the grill stuffed with lemon, ginger, and a teeny bit of cilantro, salt and pepper and it was delicious. I also grilled Blue Fish. We had a fish rainbow theme going on that night.

4. I spent all week (okay, not all week, more like 2 days) studying for a Latin quiz I was supposed to have Friday. When I got to class, my teacher said that she wouldn’t be giving a quiz that day.  -_- When I finally study, then we have no quiz?!

5. We have two more weeks of school left! Which is both terrifying and exciting. Here’s a pros and cons list of the last day of school.

Pros

-I’ll be done with highschool forever!!  😀

– I won’t have to write anymore essays for school until January!! 😀

– I won’t have anymore presentations to do for school!!  😀

-I’ll be done with highschool forever!! 😀

Cons

– I have a Latin final on the last day of class  -_-

– I have an essay due on the last day of class  -_-

-I have a presentation on the last day of class -_-

– I have so much stuff to turn in on the last day of class!! 😥

I’m currently trying to devise a way to get out of going the last day, thus maing all of my troubles disappear. Maybe I can see if there’s a drill scheduled anywhere for that day…

;D

prom

Aside 16 Apr

Today, I was going to write about all of the exciting things that have been going on in my life right now. About going to prom with my friend, about my last trip to MEPS, and about my swearing in ceremony today. But, with all that’s happened today, with all of the bombings, I feel less excited about anything thats happening in my life right now. I feel it would almost be dishonorable to talk about my accomplishments and endeavours while three people in Boston and an unknown number in Iraq have lost their lives today to bombings.

I will say that I wish I wasn’t just a sitting duck right now. I wish I could do something, anything to help the people that were directly affected, or even the family who’re waiting in hospitals to recieve word on their loved ones. I wish I could help find whatever sick bastards think things like these are okay to do. But right now, I can’t do any of that. So I’ll pray for their lives, that their injuries aren’t fatal, for the National Guardsmen and women that are going to assist them, or in the case of those in the Iraq, that anyone assists them at all. For now I’ll pray, because thats all I can do.

12 Apr

Since January, my family has done started this program of sorts where we list 5 goals for the month whatever month we’re in. We write them out on and find a motivational quote to go with them. Then we all present them to one another so everybody is held accountable. Since I’m blogging again now, I guess I’ll just post mine online as well.

April Goals

-Get up to my weight before swearing in

-Find a gym to train in

-Finish my final project

-Don’t fail exams

-Find a job in food service

What I’ve Been Up To

10 Apr

Hey again folks! (I know, no one reads my blog. But I’m just sure that one day, I’ll be one of those massively popular bloggers that has tens upon twenties of readers! Very ambitious of me. But You gotta stay optimistic y’know? I’ll just pretend for now). Anyways, since its been a billion years since I posted anything new, I’ll just list everything that I’ve been up to lately.

1. I AM SUFFERING a very severe case of senioritis (which is pretty pitiful when you consider that I only go into an actual classroom one day a week). Since I’m homeschooled though, and studied through the summer, I’ll be graduating in May istead of June ;D

2. While we’re on the subject of class, I’m pretty sure that my class this year has met the legal record for most days of school missed. At first, it was due to all of the crazy weather we got here in January. Down here, if we see a single snowflake, school is cancelled.  Then, there were a few classes where we had holiday. But the bulk of missing has been because of “prior engagements” (read as “free day off”).

3. I’m almost done with my enlistment process. Its taken longer than I thought it would, but I don’t mind.

4. I STILL don’t have my liscense -_-. But, its not just me anymore! I found out while out with my best friend on her birthday, that out of the group of the 4 of us, not one of us has our liscense! And we’re all 18 now. I know, sad. We made a bet back in January to see who could get their liscense first. So far, no one has one. It’s frickin’ April, and none of us are driving -_-. One of the girls has a 16 year old sister who is driving for cryin’ out loud!

5. I won tickets on the radio again 😀 hehehe. Matchbox 20 this time. Now all I have to do is learn all of their songs by the concert in August and I’ll be set.

6. I really want to take up self defense or a martial art and now I’m at a place where I can. I’m specifically interested in Krav Maga and Boxing right now. I have been searching for a half decent gym that isn’t trying to rip me off and has legitimately qualified trainers that know what they’re doing, but I haven’t found one yet.  It seems like everybody and their grandmother runs an MMA/BJJ gym. I literally counted seven within a ten mile radius yesterday. So if anyone knows of any in the Charlotte metro area, hit me up.

7. I’m going to prom now. Which, y’know, kinda sucks on account of the fact that I have a very serious condition called chorophobia aka fear of dancing. (Its real, I searched it on Google. I blame my parents for this). Since I’m homeschooled I almost got off scott free this year! Then, my best friend asked me, on her birthday, if I wanted to go with her. x( Well, of course I had to say yes! It was her birthday for Pete’s sake! So now, I am headed off to face that night. On the plus side, I found an awesome dress, since she wouldn’t let me wear my t-shirt/ Also a plus, I get to wear whatever shoes I want :D. At first, I was gonna get some sequins Chucks to match my dress, but they only sell them online and I waited too long. Plus, when am I ever gonna wear sequins anything again? So I went with some simple black vans with pink shoelaces (because wearing tennis shoes just wouldn’t be drawing enough attention to myself already).

8. To get over my chorophobia, I’ve been doing a lot more of it lately. I’ve done the Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, and Cupid Shuffle more times in the last 2 months than I care to count. I’ve also come to realize something during these last few months: I dance like Ellen DeGeneres. It works for her, not sure if I’m pulling it off though. Ah well. At least I know that once I get past this, I’ll never have to dance in public again.

Merry Chistmas and all that Jazz

10 Apr

Merry Christmas Eve, andd congradulations on surviving the end of the world! I havewn’t got much time, so here’s what I’ve been up to lately.

1. Saw the Hobbit. It wasn’t terrible. Now, I’m a BIG LOTR fan, so I was less than thrilled by all of the additions Mr. Peter Jackson&Co. have decided to make to the story line. Other than that, it was okay. Not a terrible way to spend 4 hours of my life.

2. Decided to Enlist into the Army National Guard. This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision. I’ve been thinking about it for a few years actually. It’s taken this long for me to seriously do my research. Also,  had to convince my Dad, who wasn’t as in love with the idea as I am. I still have a few more questions before I go and see a recruiter, so if anyone who reads this blog (assuming people actually DO read this blog hehe) has/is ever been enlisted or is related to someone who is/was that wouldn’t mind answering some of my questions. I’d sure appreciate it. 🙂

3. I’ve decided to stay in school. For those of you who don’t know me personally, you don’t know that I’m currently in my senior year of homeschool. I’ve currently got more than enough credits to just go ahead and graduate this semester, but after a lot of thought and a few almost very dumb and possibly life changing decisions, I’ve decided to finish out. I realized the only reason that I wanted to graduate early is because I felt like I needed to do something super impressive to compare to the rest of my peers, which usually isn’t a good reason to do something. Also, the National Guard isn’t too crazy for people who don’t have the discipline to finish out highschool.

4. I still don’t have my liscense. -_- Don’t wanna talk about it.

That’s all I can think of right now. I’m not gonna promise to update soon becuase that almost never happens now. See ya when I see ya

🙂

MOS Complications

10 Apr

Well, today I had to pick another MOS AGAIN -_-. (Just go with it, I’ll explain later). This is the second day in a row. Yesterday, when I went to talk to my recruiter, I was a 35p hopeful. Then, upon arriving at the base, we discovered that that slot- the ONLY Linguist slot available in the entire state- was snatched away by some other lucky son of a gun while I was away on Spring break. I, of course, was disappointed. 😦 <– that’s my sad face.

Then, we looked around for a bit and found another MOS that we thought would fit me, Blackhawk Heli Repair. I have to admit, at first I wasn’t crazy about the new job. But after I finished wallowing in my own self pity over not getting my dream MOS, I realized how awesome it was going to be to work on Blackhawks! I mean, how many girls can say that they repaired and flew in Blackhawks right? Well, as I found out this morning, I won’t be one of the few. It turns out that there was a soldier who requested a transfer to the unit that was offering that position -_-. Of course, I understand the NGs position; why send a brand new grunt through all that training when there is someone who’s already qualified to do the job? Still, I’m a little disappointed.

Now, as of this morning, I’m going to be a 91B, Light Vehicle Mechanic. I’m supposed to swear in Monday, but I can’t help but wonder whether or not I’ll end up with another MOS by then.

🙂
